After checking in, we rested a while before driving out to Queensbay Mall, then to Air Hitam to visit Kek Lok Si and Bukit Bendera (aka Penang Hill).
Driving to Queensbay Mall was easy, with clearly marked road signs, but we also got some help from Google Maps, when driving towards Air Hitam.
Too bad, when we reached Kek Lok Si, it was already 5pm, and the place was already closing. I still managed to snap some pictures of the turtles there, on the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM.
After the temple disappointment (or not), we proceeded to Penang Hill. It was like 5 minutes drive from Kek Lok Si. From there, we took the Penang Hill Funicular Train up. The ride was RM8 per pax (return) for MyKad holders. The train ride was the only highlight of Penang Hill.
It wasn’t that cold up there, 823m up, but there were 2 stops in between for residents. I was pleasantly surprised there were houses on the hills.
When it was dark, it was time to leave Penang Hill, and hunt for food, and where else but Gurney Drive. Starting up the Google Maps to assist us, we were on our way. However, the Google Maps did not show the correct route because there were many one-way streets in Georgetown. Google Maps directed to drive against flow of traffic in Georgetown. We still made it there.
It was difficult to find parking on the roadside, so we proceeded to park at Gurney Plaza (RM3 for 1st 3 hours). Gurney Plaza is a very nice place to shop here. A mere 5-minute walk and we reached the hawker center. The only long queue there was this “Char Koay Teow” stall #71. We didn’t try it because we hate queuing up for food.
We had servings of cockles, sotong kangkung and grilled cuttlefish, and pasembor (below).
With our stomachs full, we proceeded with the drive back to the hotel. That was the end of the first day in Georgetown.
